Buying Rubber Floor Mats

Friday, March 12th, 2010

When buying rubber floor mats you should first determine what type of mat, you would like for your home or office and decide what activities will be performed on those areas.  Rubber mats can be used for professional office spaces, storage spaces or recreational activities.  They are durable enough to be used for more than one of those activities as well.

Another consideration when searching for the proper rubber mat for your floor is to decide the duration in which the rubber mats will be laid on the floor.  For some, they will be laid for only as long as it takes to accomplish the activity, yoga mats used in Yoga stretching, for example.  Others they will be permanent flooring for certain offices or perhaps a gravity-based exercise equipment area.  Still others may use them for semi-permanent structures.  In this case, someone may convert a room in their house as a seasonal storage area and remove then replace the rubber floor mats every few months.

There are several different types of rubber floor mats and each has their good and bad points.  Rollout rubber floor mats can be purchased in rolls.  Often a buyer would contact the manufacturer, who would cut the length to the specifications of the purchaser.  This is convenient and appears very professional, as the amount of creases in the flooring is greatly reduced.  The down side is the rubber mats are specially designed for one particular floor plan, and while the rubber rolls may be transplanted to another location, the rubber mats will likely require cutting and pasting to fit the new location.

Interlocking tiles are a much more convenient style of mat when it may be likely that your location may change.  If you are in a large area that has floor to ceiling support beams, like a warehouse or a basement, interlocking rubber mats may be the wise choice.  You may need to cut the rubber mats to fit around the support beams, and in this case, you will only cause damage to one or two mats.  These mats can then be replaced if you move to a new location instead of an entire roll.

You can also find rubber mats designed for specific areas like that of a garage.  These rubber floor mats will have a special type of texture to suit the needs of a garage.

Once you have mapped out your floor plan and decided on the types of floor mats you will be using, you should decide on the thickness of your mats and the special materials.  Different companies use different materials in their mats so much research is needed on this topic.  Depending on how much protection you floor, or the equipment to be used on it requires, you may easily determine what is appropriate.  Sizes can generally range from 1/4″ to 2″ in thickness.

The final consideration for buying rubber floor mats would be a particular type of adhesive, which would only be required on permanent flooring surfaces.  Many of the rubber floor mats on the market provide their own form of traction.  Whatever your goals, there is a rubber floor mat that can suit your needs.
